What binds Blanche and Josephine families is our generational connections to Saint Peter Claver‘s Catholic Church, established in 1892, Rodman Street in Philadelphia and to some, our DNA. Both families lived about a two minute walk, around the corner, from the Mother church of Philadelphia’s African-American Catholic community..
In the late 1800’s, Blacks weren’t welcomed as parishioners in other Philadelphia Catholic churches. So for both families living around the corner from nuns that offered kindness, education, and social support to Black Catholics, like our families, was important and contributed to our connections. Two generations of our families attended school there. Rest in peace to all our ancestors who are no longer with us that supported St. Peter Claver church and school.
Did you know our family homes were only a block apart? The Morgan-Simmons lived at 1111 Rodman Street, while the Lindsey-Davis lived at 1240 Rodman Street. To walk to each of our family houses would take less than 3 minutes..
As we gather to honor our ancestors, their religious faith, and overcoming adversity. Let us celebrate our future and share with each other our family stories as we build family cohesiveness for generations to come.
